Washington Central School Configuration Listening Sessions
Context & Purpose

Any work we do to consider our district’s school configuration must be guided by the roadmap laid out in our Strategic Plan. That plan defines clear criteria rooted in our shared values and our unwavering commitment to providing every student with the best possible learning environment.

With the administration’s recommendations and the benchmarks we’ve established, we are now at a point where we can begin turning these ideals into action.

The administration has proposed models designed to reflect what we know is best for students—models that provide consistency, stability, and sustainability. These are not abstract ideas; they are carefully developed using our district’s criteria and benchmarks related to class sizes, travel times, expanding resources, broadening access to programming, and overall student equity.

On Wednesday, October 15, the Washington Central Configuration Committee, a group of school board members and community representatives, voted to recommend this model and advance it to the full School Board for consideration.

We recognize that any change carries potential impacts, both immediate and long-term. While the School Board is elected to represent the community, it cannot encompass every perspective on its own. That’s why we are asking our community members and all stakeholders to participate; to help us make thoughtful, forward-looking decisions that meet our strategic goals and, above all, serve the moral imperative to do what is right for our students, families, and communities.

The full School Board will review and consider this model later in November. If adopted, the next step would be to develop a comprehensive transition plan to reimagine our district’s schools. This plan would include:

  • Three newly designed elementary schools, and

  • A reimagined middle school serving three grade levels.

The district’s leadership team would then present this transition plan to the entire Washington Central community.

It’s important to note that no school facility can be closed without majority approval by voters in the town where that school operates. The specific recommendations regarding any closures would only move forward if the Board adopts the proposed configuration model.

Our Community

Washington Central serves the five rural towns that surround Montpelier, Vermont’s state capital, with U-32 as our Middle School and High School. The towns – Berlin, Calais, East Montpelier, Middlesex and Worcester – are all classic, close-knit New England villages. The presence of state government, the home office of a national financial services company, a variety of post-secondary educational institutions, and a relatively well-educated population ensure that our students have many educational, social, and cultural opportunities.
